Betfair trading | Australian racing | Key trading information

Since this video was created, the terms have changed again in Australia. For the latest terms visit here: –

I’ve actively traded Australian markets since 2006, initially with limited success, but in 2009 I had a breakthrough moment that meant Australian markets became a bigger part of my trading mix each week.

The Australian markets trade in a similar way to the UK markets, but from there a lot is different.

It’s easy to blunder into Australian racing if you are a Betfair trading, without realising what some of these key differences are.

So I decided to do a full video on the key aspects of Australian racing before you dive in unprepared.

  1. You touched on race types in this video Peter. Leaving aside liquidity, have you got favourite and least favourite race types?

  2. I'd always wondered exactly what Australia's issue was with betting exchanges. Just found this statement from HKJC regarding Betfair Aus trying to get back into the Hong Kong market.

"“However, the club would like to reiterate its position that betting exchanges violate and are a serious threat to the integrity of racing. Indeed, in the club’s view, the ability for people to lay a horse and profit from it not winning is intrinsically at odds with the principles of the sport.”

    Anyone spot the deliberate hypocrisy?

  3. Jumps racing alive and well in Victoria, we just had the autumn carnival at Warrnambool with reasonable liquidity across the card 👍

  4. Racing hopefully resumes in the UK in approximately a fortnights time, what’s the chances of the new update being released around then?

  5. I've been paper trading using practice mode (with a few live tests) Australian markets since November now, it was all going well until the Covid shutdown which has seen so much more money go into them and scewed my data. Beware, what we are seeing currently is not normal from what I have observed – the markets usually make Irish markets look quite sane. I do have a query regarding throughput on Harness racing, I cannot make out if it appies the same in NSW, the wording is quite vague and make it appear that its related to 'thoroughbred' betting. Also, thanks for clearing up that it's back bets that are counted (I think that's what you said) not lay betting – or did I misinerpret it? As ever, thank you Peter for your insights, you save people a lot of pain 🙂

  6. good info peter keep them coming brilliant bit at end I was drinking cup of tea and I spat it all over my cat was crying laughing should do that on every video during this lockdown puts a smile on my face brilliant

  7. POC is the real problem with gambling in Aus and it’s the biggest contributor in Australia for markets moving

  8. Good video. I live in australia. In your opinion whats your best strategy for trading horse racing here in australia?

  9. Nice video, helpful as always as a Pom who’s now living in Aus with 13 years experience of the markets it’s very tricky and the markets adjust wildly here compared to UK. Real steamers and drifters. Would love a video of your experiences with Aus racing and how you’ve overcome these pitfalls certainly at the country tracks where a godolphin 2yo goes from 2.0 to 1.4 to 2.6 in 4 minutes just before the off!!
