Paris are back to winning ways in Toulouse!

Paris Saint-Germain won against Toulouse on matchday 5 of Ligue 1 to confirm their position at the top of the table (0-3). Here’s a look back at the match!

In a frantic period ahead of their first European games of the season, the Parisians came up against the newly-promoted Tรฉfรฉcรฉ. For this second match in three days, Christophe Galtier understandably rotated Nordi Mukiele, Danilo Pereira and Juan Bernat into the starting line-up, while the Messi-Neymar Jr-Mbappรฉ trio continued in attack.

In this battle of the champions, the opening minutes quickly set the scene: there would be plenty of chances for both sides! And although the Parisians were the first to set the Stadium alight, Philippe Montanier’s men also quickly displayed their counter-attacking qualitiesโ€ฆ And the Toulouse players quickly gave Donnarumma a few saves to make. But to no avail!

Patience was therefore going to be the key to this match, at both ends of the pitch… As evidenced by the four shots on target from each side at the half-hour mark. And when it looked like the goal was coming, Maxime Dupรฉ, the Toulouse goalkeeper, did his best to keep out Leo Messi (25′, 44′) or Kylian Mbappรฉ (35′). But it was once again the unstoppable Neymar Jr who found the back of the net! This time, the Brazilian found the breakthrough with a lovely finish – a goal that was awarded after VAR’s intervention (0-1, 38′).

With their opponents now forced to get forward, the lines were stretched a little further after the break. With Marco Verratti and Leo Messi on the ball, they were able to take the game up another notch. After his first-half assist, Messi added to his tally with a delightful pass to Kylian Mbappรฉ, whose first-time shot hit the back of the net! (0-2, 5′).

Once the second goal was scored, the Rouge et Bleu began to put even more pressure on Toulouse. From Nuno Mendes’ bursts to the efforts of the Vitinha-Verratti duo, a flurry of chances began to put the southerners under pressure. Dupรฉ continued to perform brilliantly in goal against an ever electric Mbappรฉ (71′) and then the substitue Hugo Ekitike (81′). In a match as open as it was exciting, Christophe Galtier was true to his usual style, making some changes, including the introduction of Renato Sanches, Hakimi and Juan Bernat. It was the Spaniard who scored the final goal of the match, taking advantage of Kylian Mbappรฉ’s snap shot that hit the post (0-3, 90+1′).

The French champions were focused, hard working and exciting as they took another victory and a clean sheet back to the capital. This victory allows our Rouge et Bleu to consolidate their position as leaders before another trip to Nantes this Saturday. This is the last domestic game before a new European campaign…
