  1. Try backing up your NAS with 1 gbps and you directly know why we need 10 GBps networks .. My Nas is full of movies/music 12 TB… It takes forever

  2. The video title I misleading. It makes people think that the setup won't help if u have a 2.5gb internet speed. Fix It. Thanks

  3. 2022 here and many locations for Xfinity have over 1 Gbps speeds in much of the US. 2.5 Gbps needed for full capability

  4. Actually, it can make you internet faster, sort of.

I can answer this because i HAVE DONE THIS EXPERIMENT.

With my previous modem that had 2x 1Gigabit ports that you can't load balance, i was never really getting my full 1Gig internet connection. Maybe 800 to low/mid 900s. I even used a Cat7 cable at least 3 ft in length (any shorter as a direct connection between devices can cause issues).

In my own house, i made ever effort to reduce bottle necks. I have a 10gb connection between the router and switch, and the switch to the server. The only bottle neck left WAS THE MODEM (Arris 8200).

I finally found a cable modem that had at least a 2.5g port on it.

Magically, i now can get just over 1gb from the internet regularly on speed test (1068mbps is what it hits on average).

The truth is, ethernet, just like wireless, has an actual performance limit. You are not going to actually get 1gb from Ethernet but you will get up there.

Having 2.5gb opens up that top end giving you more space to work in even though you don't really need it for 99.9% of people and applications out there.

Do you NEED 2.5gb connections for home internet? NO, no one really needs it. Most don't really need over 100mbps down. It is nice to have but the average user doesn't need that much. Even when you watch download speeds for games or Netflix, everything is done in bursts and never really goes that high. I never seen Netflix break 60mbps before (the router tracks all).

Hey LTT, if you are hiring, I have a lot i can contribute. I love doing the exact same experiments you do. Helps me break tech information down for clients in a realistic terms.

  5. I have eero 6 pro mesh network with 2gbit fiber internet how would I hook a wired 2.5 network connection and keep my WiFi running. The out port on the eero is gigabyte

  6. I store hundreds of TB of data on a NAS , so for me, speed between the NAS and other systems on my home network is more important than Internet download speed. But yeah, load balanced 1Gb using 802.3ad/LACP is cheaper than other solutions!

  7. Can someone help out so I have an asus x570-p mobo but it says it only supports 10/100 I have gig speed at my home will this ethernet card allow me to utilize my gig internet ?

  8. I love looking back at this now. When a year ago all I could get was 12 mbps and now just one year later AT&T finally upgraded my area to 10Gig for “business”.

  9. Linus, great video, a few questions for you, I am a tech enthusiasts, love to upgrade to new tech, but sometimes I ask myself, am I making the right choice?? You know how that is, so I ask you, I have a asus router with 2.5 go connection, if I obtain a 2.5 switch and connect it to that port will it "" and "" improve my network connection? Of course that would also be considering adding 2.5 Lan cards to my pcs, wondering if that would help things? Tks

  10. Wow. Update a year later we have finally have residential 2.5G WAN with google fiber, att fiber 5gig WAN for $180. And more 2.5G WAN routers/modems

  11. Now that WiFi 6 is a thing and has faster than gig speeds, wired connections need to be faster so it makes sense now to switch to 2.5 or 5 gig lan, On the Quest 2, airlink works best with wifi 6 speeds, but it bottle necks on the hardwire connection to my desktop gaming pc, so I am planning to upgrade to at least 2.5 gig soon, but I also want to set up my plex server and backup NAS. Right now the fastest internet they have available is the 950 x 30 but Docsis 3.1 can do more than gig speeds and the modem has dual gigabit with link aggregation. Just need to find a router that will handle that.

  12. I personally want to upgrade just so I can move video files around my laptop and desktop, also would be great to plug in a new ssd into a router and get the faster speeds

  13. My main and lounge PC will both have 2.5G ethernet, but 2.5G switches to connect them still cost a lot, and my router is only 1G.

  14. I have a 500 mb per second internet connection from my provider. What card should I buy to get the most out of my internet speed. I have an old Gateway PC from 2008. It still runs great except for when I try to watch a movie and play a game on FB at the same time, The image freezes for a few seconds from time to time. Thank you.

  15. You can recommend a 24-Port managed layer-2 switch with 2.5G support? Currently planning to get a UniFi, but its only 1G.

  16. i have 1200mbps+ but no router supports multiple 2.5gbs that i can find … just switches. I see a preorder for the new asus but thats $400!?

  17. For the past few days ive been reasrching this 2.5gbit ethernet. I ended up making a direct link to my home server and my pc using 2 external cards. The home server runs windows server 2019 so the setup was just a breeze. Now i can copy and access stuff from the fileshare much faster (My pc has no hdds, only a single samsung 970 evo plus 500GB ssd). Well worth it

  18. still looking to buy new build. can get a b450 amd board with great sound but only 1gb lan. i want a 5700g so i can't even use pcie4 if i had it but b550 boards got 2.5gb lan i i like to hoard internet stuff like kirby. the b450 would save me 60 bucks.

  19. My pc case came with one that could barley hot 100 mb/s. The 2.5 just let me take more of what was already there.
