4th Grade Math 2.5, Multiply Using the Distributive Property

The Distributive Property states that multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend by that number, and then adding the products. We can use the Distributive Property to multiply a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number. We can break apart the greater number as a sum of two lesser numbers. Next, we multiply each of the two lesser numbers by the 1-digit factor. Then we can add those partial products to find the total product. We’ll get the same answer no matter how we break apart the 2-digit number. We multiply a 1-digit number by a 2-digit number by using grid paper. We multiply 1-digit number by a 2-digit number by using base ten blocks. We see how we can use mental math to solve multiplication problems that involve a 1-digit and 2-digit number. We write a word problem that fits a picture, write an equation, then solve. We see why it’s helpful to use parentheses when writing or solving an equation with more than one operation.
