Betting or Betfair trading | Is there much difference? Peter Webb | Bet Angel

In this video, I talk about the key differences between betting and trading.

I often see people talking about betting strategies, but then say they are trading. Some Betfair trading strategies look suspiciously like betting to me as well.

Having been somebody that actual bets and trades for a living the line between the two is clearly defined.

But generally, there seems to be quite a fog of confusion about what is actually a betting strategy and what is a Betfair trading strategy.

For me, there is a clear definition. Betting strategies tend to be heavily influenced by the actual outcome of the event, tend to stake only once and have a high return relative to stake.

If you are Betfair trading, your profit would tend to be outcome independent and your stake will be high compared to your return, and you can perform the trade more than one to recycle your money through the market.

Even then, I would insert other caveats because long term success when trading will all be about being the underlying ‘natural’ strike rate in the market.

  1. Pretty sure poms cannot punt anyway judging by markets all over the place on Uk markets . Aussie racing so much easier

  2. It's apples and oranges, they're all bets but just with different objectives. If your guess however well informed it is (on outcome, direction, or non-directional 2-fills) can make or loss you money then it's a bet and to argue otherwise is just playing semantics.

  3. Have done a lot of thinking regarding this very subject over the last 6 months. And I’m at odds with you on this one Peter. (If you’ll pardon the pun)
The areas within a football match to trade are extremely difficult to find. No two matches are the same. There are so many variables in a game, you simply cannot account for them all. The best strategy you can muster, can be undone in a heartbeat where the beautiful game is concerned. When you place a trade into a game, you are in essence betting the minute you do so. If it goes your way, bingo, you make a profit. If it doesn’t, you loose. The only thing one can do, as you mentioned, is limit your losses. That then becomes a damage limitation exercise. Which I’ll agree with you is better than loosing your whole stake, we all want to win don’t we???
Look I’m open to all opinions, a fresh approach even. Maybe I’ve gone stale. But, for me, at this moment in time, where footy is concerned, trading in football matches is a dyeing art.

  4. We cannot use betangel in Australia to trade on sports in play you have to literally call them on a phone to trade in or out of a position it is heartbreaking to not be able to try

  5. Aren't 'trading' and 'value betting' equivalent though? You won't make money trading unless you have value on at least one side of your trade? Taking the coin flip as an example where we know the true odds of it being heads are 2.0. If you enter a trade by backing at 2.1 and exiting with a lay at 2.05 then you'll make money because the back bet was +EV bet, but the exit lay was a -EV bet, therby reducing your profits long term.

As another example you could enter with a back bet of 1.95 (-EV) and exit with a lay bet at 1.9 (+EV), and the reason the trade makes money is because of the +EV exit bet.

If you just made the +EV bets and left out the -EV bets you'd make more money long term.

  6. Thanks for that Peter … I'm just starting to get my head around this sports trading after enjoying many years of sports betting . I'd love to see a video or hear about how you go about trading the golf . It's always been an area where I've done pretty well betting on the golf and would appreciate anything regarding a strategy or system to help me to advance on my golf trading journey . Thanks Robin

  7. the problem I have with Betfair trading videos especially from Caan Berry is a lot of dressing up the subject with all manner of flowery comments and vague statements to hide the obvious.

if you don't know your "sport" or are willing to become an expert…betfair trading will lose you money much the same as recreational gamblers when they punt.

Your previous videos have given an insight to the expert knowledge you need with horse racing, Caan Berry lets it slip with comments on how he studies racing industry publications.

Video course /software buyers who think spending will fast track them to being rich are mistaken in my opinion….the expert knowledge needed is always missing from betfair videos

  8. Why don't you just come out and say it Peter.. England are extremely over valued going into this game tonight lol. Seriously though, I'm a newbie to trading but I can't help but feel that Italy are being under valued on the betfair exchange. It just feels like the madness of crowds is driving England's price down, I could be wrong.

  9. Interesting video, because I been wanting to get into football but I cannot see the difference between betting and trading when it comes to football.

  10. Great info more betting topics like money management and tilt would be good or do u just bet like a computer with no emotion it's crazy hard to win longterm you have to be sharp all day long anyways thanks
