The Panthers are open for business.

The NFL rumor mill is buzzing with trade rumors after Carolina fired head coach Matt Rhule last week.

The Panthers’ biggest trade chip is Pro Bowl running back Christian McCaffrey. Here’s the latest:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter: “The Carolina Panthers are listening to other teams about a potential trade for star running back Christian McCaffrey, although a deal might not be easy to complete, league sources tell ESPN.”

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport: “The #Panthers are receiving lots of interest in RB Christian McCaffrey and they will, at least, field the calls.”

The Charlotte Observer: “The front office has been willing to listen to calls about McCaffrey ahead of the NFL trade deadline on Nov. 1, according to a league source with knowledge of the Panthers’ thinking, and would consider significant offers.”

So what would it take for a team to trade for McCaffrey? Schefter has an idea.

The Panthers rebuffed at least two teams’ inquiries into trading for McCaffrey last week and will continue to reject overtures they don’t consider significant offers, according to sources. If the Panthers do not receive what they feel is a real offer — with a high draft pick or multiple picks — they are adamant that they will hold on to McCaffrey past the NFL’s Nov. 1 trade deadline, sources told ESPN.

McCaffrey rushed for 69 yards and added seven receptions for 89 yards in Sunday’s 24-10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

The 26-year-old running back was an All-Pro in 2019, when he ran for a career-best 1,387 yards and 15 touchdowns while adding 1,005 receiving yards on 116 catches.

But he’s struggled to stay healthy, playing in a total of 10 games in 2020 and 2021 combined. Before the 2020 season, McCaffrey signed a four-year, $64 million contract extension, which included a $21.5 million signing bonus.

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 1.
