Decomposing Bodies to Solve Cold Case Murders

The number of missing persons and unidentified remains in the United States has been called “the nation’s silent mass disaster” by the National Institute of Justice. Since 1980, there have been 250,000 recorded unsolved homicides in the United States, and due to lack of funding and support for forensic research and law enforcement training, that number continues to grow.

Scientists at the Institute for Forensic Anthropology & Applied Sciences at the University of South Florida are looking to change all of that through their work at USF’s Facility for Outdoor Research and Training (FORT). On this “body farm”, scientists and law enforcement officials come together to exchange knowledge about how bodies decompose in Florida’s subtropical environment in the hopes of creating new processes to solve some of the nation’s cold cases.

  1. I have to add that the tissue depth indicators are getting harder and harder to determine since the obesity levels have skyrocketed in this country. I'm old enough to remember before the "body positivity" fad started that people would say to a young woman, especially, that "you have such a pretty face, you would be a really gorgeous girl if you could just lose weight". I see those TikTok videos where an enormously obese young person has very nice facial features you can detect, but the absence of a neck and multiple chins makes them look much less attractive, but then they now believe they don't have to be attractive anymore because "they are absolutely perfect the way they are." I have seen girls "give up"….but anyway, the same thing with anorexia. But for that reason, the tissue depth measurements are getting less and less useful in modern facial reconstructions. Although I am sure you can determine if a totally decayed skeletal body was morbidly obese using other methods.

  2. Caylee Anthony suddenly sprung to my mind. She was left two blocks from her own grandparent's home, in an area that gets flooded in the hurricane period, and sometimes I buy into the idea that the grandpa tried to help his daughter out by leaving her in a place he knew might get flooded but that would be so close to home that she wouldn't feel abandoned by her own family. That's how parents and grandparents feel…. I can tell you I would've begged my parents to cover up the "accidental" death of their grandchild….

  3. I think this is one field where men and women are equally fascinated. It's not like mechanics, or other STEM fields, women are interested for the human component, the way humans felt, how they were killed, etc, while men are usually interested in the chemistry and etymological and other less related to our humanity and more about the sheer mechanics of it….

  4. Klaus Schwab will be interested in the data because humans are the next fertilizer. Ukrainians are already advertising biodegradable body bags so their bodies will enrich the soil.

  5. Graphic content, it's not like dead people attack you or something. Better fear the living, not the dead.

  6. No funding to help identify missing people. But there's plenty to fund wars outside of our own country! Ask Ukraine how many billions they've been given so far. We're represented by warmongering idiots who would rather measure dicks with the rest of the world than to keep a healthy, housed and well fed population. Now why the hell would they be concerned with the American people when they can play war all day long?

  7. I've agreed to donate my body to this cause. I only wish I could see what they use my corpse in specific for. Hopefully it will bring some closure or solace to someone's family. Lord knows I don't have any family of my own so nobody is going to bury/cremate me anyways, maybe my remains can bring some comfort to someone. I can't imagine a worst fate than murder. If my lifeless body can help provide clues in a murder case then that would be the best thing I ever did.

  8. If only they would have more police working on these cases and not pulling people over for dumb money grabbing schemes like a license plate lights.

  9. The thing about the grass growing taller was crazy now I’m gonna be looking for oddly tall grass patches in the fields 👀

  10. No I , as well as tons of other Americans think this go with the simply answer is hardly ever the answer .. that’s a pharmaceutical way of thinking

  11. I maybe crazy but this is what i want to do or leave my body to medical school. I have so many illnesses that i think i would be interesting body to learn from😂
