Do I “Deserve” More Subscribers?

Sometimes, as a “smaller” YouTuber, I get comments saying that my channel deserves more subscribers and/or views. So, I beg the question, do I or does anybody really deserve more than what they get?

  1. Jim, I’m going to be completely honest with you here. First of all, I, along with many others appreciate the work you put in. The reason why I don’t watch your reviews are because I never really feel you have anything more than a superficial interest in the games you review. The gameplay footage (I’m not sure whether it’s you or taken from elsewhere) is often quite low-skilled, which is fine but it makes me feel that you haven’t spent too much time with the games you’re reviewing. There is rarely any mention of the game mechanics or level design. Retro gaming is quite niche and many enthusiasts are into the games on quite a deep level. If you can appeal to people on that level, I’m sure your reviews will get more hits. You’ve definitely contributed a lot over the years and your channel has been a valuable resource. Keep it up.

  2. As somebody who likes the barcade videos and reviews as much as your game hunting videos, I'm really glad you have an attitude of posting whatever feels good to you. Paper towels.

  3. im new to your channel and wish i knew of it earlier… you have nostalgia mix of game sack and classic game room with modern content. glad to be aboard

  4. Hey Jim, I can't speak for others, but the videos of yours I like the best are the ones like this, or the ones where you are walking around Tokyo talking. This is the same reason why I like watching Sam's rant videos

  5. Yes, Paper Towels are good to have when you need it. Great video Jim. I've been subscribed to your channel for a few years now, and while I don't watch every video that gets uploaded, I always leave a like on the videos that I do watch, including this video. I wish you and your channel all the best both this year and the many years to come Jim. Take Care!

  6. Paper towels. Love your content and your story Jim. I think, that some people just haven't found you yet. Greetings from Austria.

  7. Do I need a PC Engine Arcade System Card in order to play the likes of Art of Fighting on the PC Engine Duo-R X?

  8. Paper towels. You're a very humble and logical guy. I enjoyed the discussion. It's a common sentiment on YouTube for sure, and I think you nailed it. I look forward to seeing your channel continue to grow. I always enjoy your content, and I'm happy if you make content that you enjoy making.

  9. I've been watching for almost a year from the recommendation of my other hero Happy Console Gamer and not just the games but your life in Japan has inspired me to fulfill my dream of going to Tokyo which I will do in January. You are so genuine like HCG and Ircha Gaming your voice and point of view is awesome man.

  10. i treat my art on twitter the same way. you get what you put in. i see some artists obsess with "likes" and posting days/times but when their posts don't do well it's the algo and not the work itself. i think that quality will shine through and that's the most important thing when posting art online. also paper towels

  11. I've said channels are "Underviewed" or "Underrated" for their quality of content and their scope. I think you're right in some ways but I disagree in others. For what you're in control of (Subject, camera and audio quality, cinematography) you may well deserve what you work for. You have a limited demographic. Specifically people interested in Retro Video Games who also like Japan or import games. However, the Youtube algorithm is fickle and frequently changes, setting unreasonable expectations for creators to keep up. Yes, some creators feel entitled, but the reality is there is limited space at the top of everyone's feed. If we meet in the middle, it's pretty unreasonable for Youtube to put out this monster for Creators to wrangle on top of creating content, while it's unreasonable for creators to expect optimal success, when they are in competitions with millions of other people for eyes on their content.

  12. I can't speak for everyone, but I love that you felt the need to share your thoughts on this!

This really is a challenging question and of course, comes down to the creator as you mentioned. It's a numbers game if you want to follow it, but that's not what art/creativity is about.

From trying different avenues of art myself from music to graphic design to writing, I see YouTube as an artistic platform more than anything else. With that, however, I have learned art more often than not cannot pay the bills compared to the "nine-to-five" jobs out there in which you put in the same or fewer hours (which you also mentioned).

But I still have a channel, because it's the place I can share whatever I want without being denied the ability to create it.

My point is that you are an artist and you share your passion with others, and we are happy you are here to do it!

And the Shenmue track really fits – great choice!

  13. Hey Jim can I please get the name or link to the bg music in this video i loved it and yes you really do deserve more subscribers than those fake clickbaiters on youtube

  14. Growing your audience is difficult to do. You never know what topics will make it grow. I feel like you have the production values to get people into your channel and the content is solid. Keep up the good work!

  15. To answer, yes, you certainly deserve more viewers! love your channel. I think the problem is that people want general Japanese content, like visiting touristy spots, trying out weird food, etc. You've got quite the niche, retro game collectors who enjoy watching you stroll through dusty old Hard-Offs! haha.

Anyway man, I'm moving to japan this year to teach English, and have been a follower of yours for years. Independent content like yours has a had a pretty big impact on me. Hope I run into you some day hunting for games! Thanks for all the vids over the years.

    Take care,

    -Anthony

  16. Your channel is an excellent medium for something that has relevance to few people. If you want more subs you need more diverse content.

  17. It's good that you're keeping a positive view on things, it can be quite hard when things don't work out quite as well, so I understand people expecting you to get more out of the channel. I do think you should have more growth, but if that's not your pace, then I'd say maybe 'deserve' isn't the right word for it. Looking forward to seeing where it goes! Oh, and make sure you don't run out of paper towels! 🤣

  18. Paper towels. I usually don’t want things to get bigger. I wish success for everyone in life but when someone/something feels special or you identify with it’s hard to see them change or loose what you saw in them originally.

  19. You seem very humble, and not like someone who would ever claim to "deserve" more subscribers.

For what it's worth, I personally feel that you're producing better content than unnamed YouTubers with 1M+ subscribers. I won't use the term "deserve" here, but I know the score. Aside from that, you're a fan of Pantera. +10 points. 🙂

Disclaimer: I know nothing about being a YouTuber.

You should intentionally promote, and make the most click baity video possible and see what happens. Would probably need to be some less niche topics which unfortunately aren't retro gaming focused.

Random idea: "I went to Super Nintendo World with Captain Falcon!"

  20. You definitely deserve more Paper Towels Jim! 😂 Keep doing what you do brother, you do this for joy and we are here for the ride!
