  1. As a very casual and poor player, I have realized that people lean towards commander heavily. sighs time to learn commander.

Don’t get me wrong I’m excited to learn but damn if I don’t know it’s gonna begin to cost.

  2. First deck I built was a Red/Black with Kardur as commander; he wasn't even the focus, just a fun target for Conjurer's while I tried to build up goblin tokens with Krenko and Helm of the Host, and then drop Muxus or make use if impact tremors/goblin warlord

Converting it to mostly Red/Blue now, wanted Brudiclad as the commander for token shenanigans but couldn't bring myself to fully divest from Black sadly so he just has to sit in the deck and hopefully worm his way onto the field; maybe I'll find a way to get down to just red/blue and run a more streamlined one but I'm still learning how the game works, was a pokemon/yugioh kid and haven't played any card games since like, early-mid 2000's

  3. Seems like with every format the recommended number of lands to start with in a deck always sits around 40% of the total number of cards.

  4. Thanks Prof. This has to be one of the best explained videos on EDH deck design/build I’ve seen in a long time. Thank you for a great video. 🫡😁

  5. Step 1: Buy one
    Step 2: Win
Step 3: Piss off your friends when the deck you bought fries their home brewed state of the art literal deck from hell in their hands
    Step 4: Laugh
Step 5: Treat yourself to a toast and a drink
    Step 6: Repeat

  6. As a returning player from 2003 that fell in love with the EDH format and brought me back to the hobby, this is a wonderful video. Thank you very much for this video! ❤

  7. Got your deck box and have been building a commander deck thanks to your and command zone. I went Ur-Dragon. Don't have time for other formats so don't mind the sunk cost in 5 color.

Also goal is to one day build an elemental deck. Why? Because like you said Prof, "play what you love", and I can't wait to sling spells with dragons and elementals and make new friends.

  8. I never built a commander deck by myself. Always use the precons.
Now that i know that a side like that exists i might give it a spin and surprise my mates😈

  9. Started playing magic when gatecrash was new, my first ever commander was a budget rakdos lord of riots, now its my most expensive deck, being an 300+€ demon tribal deck

  10. He's not wrong, I had just tried to do some work On my old precon meren dec and. I had just started playing again after a few years. My deck had just the worst lands/ramp. I just ended up with meren for an extra card from grave. We tore apart my deck and I had everything right I then went on to shit on everyone the next game

  11. Step one accidentally find Umbris fear Manifest and build around that. Two become hated by your friends.

  12. Great video. As a former teacher, I can tell you I enjoy the way you disseminate information. What I learned here will be very helpful in crushing my friends who play like pros. THANK YOU!

  13. Eh draft is really the only thing that makes sense to me, not gonna lie.

Everything else is prohibitively expensive. Maybe if you have a friend that's also new to the game you could buy a commander deck and play it and some boosters or something, but since there aren't many restrictions or bans in commander, you'll end up going against insane decks with things like black lotus, dark ritual, chrome mox, etc.

Modern is also expensive, that's what I played when I started, but still couldn't keep up.

I've tried so called "budget decks" but they just have never even come close.

The downside to draft is you get a ton of cards you won't use again because you only play draft lol.

  14. Still playing the same commander I started with. The 99 around him has changed almost completely over the years-but it was fine to start with. Now it's more special to me with all the changes.

  15. Liked and subscribed. Straight forward, informational, engaging and great editing! Checked all my boxes. Well done

  16. Hehe. I run Animar. Any creature with low colored costs is basically good enough to be counted as synergy. Also Viashino Heretic. Massively underrated artifact removal.

  17. This was super helpful! I've been putting together decks that ran top heavy (and neither myself or the people I picked up magic from had the greatest grasp on the game or rules). So having some number to aim at for the content of a deck is very much appreciated.

  18. Thanks a lot fot this vid! I just bought Elven Empire and Phantom Premonition as they got an A in other video you did… gonna use them as they come (cuz I'm new to MTG), but all the recomendations here will be very useful!!

*of course, bought those decks in my local store (!!)

    Greetings from Mexico!!

  19. I really enjoy this video. Other than my Saki and Rafiq commander decks I've built, I've been having trouble making decent decks

  20. Thank you for a great video. Your videos are entertaining, informative and you are an awesome presenter. I bought my first Magic cards recently. I like winter, snow and all that goes with them. I bought two Kaldheim draft booster packs and soon after bought a draft booster box. I have a lot of cards now. I asked the store owner what was most commonly played and he told me Commander. So, I'm putting together my first deck. Finding this video and watching it, a number of times, has been very valuable. I am not clear though on whether I need 100 cards or 101 cards (including the commander) as the rule appears unclear. Thanks for your time!
