How to Change From 2.4ghz to 5ghz Wireless Network Adapter in Windows 10/8/7 [Tutorial]

Wireless adapters can run in 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, which also refers to as bands in Windows. If you’re experiencing problems with your wireless connection, you could try and specify the preferred band.

Wi-Fi can run on two different bands of radio frequency: 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz.

With Microsoft’s recent firmware update for the Surface Pro 3, among the new bits and pieces was a new Marvell Wifi driver that lets you switch between 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands on the fly. For those of us using a dual-band router, the updated driver should help resolve any related issues.

Channels are a series of sub-bands that operate within the 2.4- or 5-GHz bands. The 2.4-GHz band worked really well when the number of devices operating on the band were few and far between, but with today’s connected world, this band has become crowded, degrading network performance.

The 5-GHz band is much less crowded, resulting in less interference and higher data throughput speeds. If all your devices support it, you can force your router to use only the 5-GHz band. To check your devices for 5-GHz band support, you can check your manual. Or you can change the setting via the steps below on your router and check for devices that no longer work. If all of them work after your router reboots, all of your devices are compatible. The higher frequency band has a smaller range, however, so you’ll want to be sure all your devices will be in range of the router, or you can invest in an extender.

In an environment with other radiating devices nearby (such as microwave ovens, cordless telephones, access points, or client devices), in order to reduce interference, you may prefer the 5GHz band over the 2.4GHz band, or the reverse.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 7 operating systems.Works for all major computer manufactures (Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Samsung).

  1. My laptop has Mediatek wifi card (wifi 6 ) but when i turn on Bluetooth, the wifi speed decreases drastically. How to fix it?

  2. If there is no ‘Preferred Band’

    Select, VHT 2.4ghz and disable

Then check if works. Restart PC

    OR

Change the ‘wireless’ band to the one ending in: a/n/nc

    If that not available set
    ‘Roaming Aggressiveness’ to Highest

That’s all fixes I know of otherwise you may have to download drivers
Or it may not support 5ghz at all

  3. Bhai mere ghar me jio broadband lagaya hu lekin mobile 5g connect hota hai sirf par mere laptop me 5g show hi nahi karta hai sirf 4g wala show karta hai kya karu laptop me 5g kaise chalega btaiye please maine broadband connection lagwaya wo koi kaam ka nahi raha

  6. My Lenovo has updated (propably W10 update) the Qualcom wifi network driver to a version that won´t present the option to prefer 5ghz band. I have an Ideapad 310-15ISK. Any advice? Thank you and kudos for the channel!

  7. okay so what is your option if you cannot chose your prefered band? i can chose the wireless mode manually, but if i pick the 5ghz one it doesnt work, even tho i can select it.

  8. I dont really have the advenaced tab… everything is there, but where the advanced tab is supposed to be, i just see the ones left and right of it

  9. Hi, my router has like two bands to connect (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and in my pc the 2.4 GHz works better and stable, but while using the 5 GHz one i suffer constant latency variations and it works badly if play a videogame or i whatch a video. But when ut comes to download or update something the 5 GHz band works much better. Could you tell my the reason???

  10. Hello! Does it matter if what wireless connection you are connected to? For instance, I am using ARRIS, and I have two options where to connect to either ARRIS-02D1 or ARRIS-02D1-5G. What if I am connected to ARRIS-02D1 but I have my wireless properties changed to 5G first?

  11. For those people that can't find 5 GHz here's the reason why some devices don't have a dual band WiFi card even though your router might support both bands (5 GHz, 2.4 GHz) you might need to upgrade to a new WiFi card that has 5 GHz or buy a device that has a dual band card that supports 5 GHz.

  12. how do i know wich one of those WAN miniport is mine? i use mobile hotspot

edit: i found mine but i dont have all these options on advanced

  13. Mine only goes to 2.4 or 2.0 😑 this is so frustrating and I can't play games because of this on this laptop why do I always get the worst computers

  15. I’ve watched countless videos trying to upgrade to 5gzh everything’s compatible. Computer, modem, I’ve gone through all the settings everything. And when I switch to preferred 5ghz I shows up but won’t connect as soon as I switch back to 2.4 it connects. Do you have any suggestions? would be very much appreciated!! Thank you for your time!
