Mehedi murdered by childhood friend over Tk 2.5 lakh in Hatirjheel

Youth found dead in Hatirjheel: ‘murdered by childhood friend over Tk 2.5 lakh’.
The private university student Azizul Islam Mehedi from Chattogram, whose body was found in Hatirjheel lake on Monday, gave Tk 2.5 lakh to some passport brokers — including a childhood friend — to have some changes made in three passports.

As they could not make the changes in time, Mehedi wanted his money back.

Then, the friend called him over to Dhaka, took him to a house in Khilkhet where they gave him sedative-added food, and choked him to death.

Police, after arresting four alleged killers, raiding different areas in Dhaka yesterday revealed the information.

The arrestees are: Ahsan Ullah, friend of the victim and chef at a restaurant; his colleague Tamim Islam; Abdur Rahim and Alauddin, drivers by profession.
During primary interrogation, the arrestees admitted that they killed Mehedi as he was wanting his money back and threatened to complain to their employers otherwise, said Harun-or-Rashid, deputy commissioner (Tejgaon Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

According to police and family members, Mehedi, a master’s student at English department of Chattogram Islamic International University, used to do passport, visa-related work on the side.

He arrived in Dhaka on Saturday night and was taken to Khilkhet where he was killed. The killers tried to dump the body next morning but could not.
The body was wrapped with polythene and net. The hands and legs were tied to the neck with rope. After dark, they dumped the body in Hatirjheel lake.

Police officials said the accused distorted fingerprints of the victim so that he could not be identified.

Ahsan gave confessional statement before a magistrate while three other accused were placed on two-day remand each, police said.
