  7. Well, still better than recent American military ads, appealing to lesbian women or featuring the importance of preferred pronouns. Nothing against LGBT people but you gotta be real, that’s a fairly small minority and stuff like that alienates your primary recruiting pool of young men. I mean what percentage of lesbians would ever think of joining the military in the first place? Although it is growing women are still a minority in military. What % of women are lesbians… what % what % of women are black male trans lesbians lol???

    Those kind of ads aren’t appealing to people who would consider joining and the people they target aren’t going to decide to join the military because of them for the most part.

  17. These military ads are in Mandrian, which is lingua franca in most of China with exception of Hong Kong and Macau, they speak Cantonese dialect. Chinese living across South East Asia speaks both Mandrian and Cantonese dialects, predominantly Cantonese.

  20. Impressive however to my knowledge, China still does not have a Global Navy. They do not have the long term Overseas capabilities as does America and are limited to short area defense. The Ad itself although a little cliche I'd give a 8 out of 10

  21. 青蒜 = green garlic is pronounced identically to 清算 or "settling the scores". The quickly growing garlic symbolizes the day of finally setting the score (with ROC) is approaching.

  25. The second ad was originally a music video. The title meant "We request a long spear". Chinese long spears are often considered weapons for the youth and decorated by red tassels (like in the opera). The words are from a Tang dynasty poem about joining the army. The clips in the movie about ancient Chinese army are mostly from old movie and TVs. The marching infantry with red triangle flags are from the movie Hero by Yimou Zhang. These clips are pretty accurate–the movie/TV producers usually go to archaeologists to make sure both the weaponry props and the costumes are accurate in designs (even if not in material)

  26. For the second ad, the marching infantry was Qin. The Chinese Opera in the ad is supposed to be about Song Dynasty, about a young couple (husband and wife) competing to see who got to be the commander and led the army into the battle. The wife won. Scholars also said that the wife was likely to be from one of the Steppe minority tribes. So you got your double doses of diversity there.

  29. In 57:43 , they pay tribute to Wang Wei the pilot of a J-8 Jet who crashed with an American Spy plane P3C in the South China Sea, telling the people hero will not be forgotten.

  32. Hey Alex, fun video. If you want further analysis on Chinese military propaganda or history, feel free to contact me. I think I'm a better versed in Chinese language and history than DPA since I actually lived in China for 15 years. I can literally translate that song in the second ad.
