Suzuki 2.5 rough idle – Attempting to fix by eliminating ignition problems.

We start at Aberdovey hoping to launch but the winds just become dangerous. 2nd plan is to fix the motor in the garage. I clean the old spark plug and re-gap – I then try a new spark plug in the garage off the boat to fix the idle problem. The idea is i’m trying to eliminate ignition problems for the rough and non existent idle. Failing that my last ditch attempt is to launch the motor on the boat and give it a hot extended run. With all the rain we’ve been having I soon learn how the most calm and sheltered waters can catch you out.
I get caught in flood water with a defective motor avoiding fallen debris!

  1. I’ve just purchased one of these Suzuki 2.5 motors. It’s replacing a Johnson 3hp for exactly the reason you mention – it needs to work properly all of the time. I may at some point be able to repair the Johnson but I want to be out on the water right now with a dependable motor. Generally speaking, if an engine exhibits good performance at wide open throttle, you can rule out the ignition system as being associated with an idle problem. Your warnings about a high idle causing potential damage to the clutch dogs is spot on and my Johnson 3hp has issues of popping out of gear because of this type of damage – the replacement parts are expensive.

  2. I have the same motor DF2.5 2009 for my Multi23 Trimaran. I live in Seattle, so moderate climate and at sea level. My engine would never idle except with some choke on, even when warm. I cleaned the carb and changed jets. Maybe a little better. I ended up just purchasing a new carburetor online, plus new gaskets. CARBURETOR {MODEL:08~} 13200-97J40

With the new carb, it ran nearly perfect. Also, the idle RPM is higher than your ear may tell you. I bought a tachometer and found out that I was trying to set the idle RPM too low. So I set it to factory spec. Runs better. But I ended up with a Torqeedo Travel 1003. That's another story.

Sad story now. My motor fell in Lake Union (freshwater) last week, and the divers just retrieved it. I found your channel looking for maintenance advice. Lots of water in the carb. I drained the engine oil and fuel tank and they were full of water. Removed the spark plug and turned the engine upside down and maybe some water came out. Sprayed everything with WD-40, carb, cylinder, intake manifold. I was surprised with draining the oil. The engine was upright on a stand. I decided to move and tilt the engine all around, and I was surprised how much additional oil and water came out.

So I'm going to fill the crankcase with oil, run it, drain it, and repeat a few times. Wish me luck.

  3. Hi there I have just bought a 3.3 meter Bark inflatable boat with this engine do you think it will be enough power for the boat on the river Thames thank you 😊
