The Defensive War on the Western Front I THE GREAT WAR Week 16

The German army dug in at the Western Front and waited for the next Russian attack at the Eastern Front. Even though the Germans outnumbered their opponents, they barely stood a chance against machine guns in No Man’s Land. They realize: to defend a position is a lot easier than to attack and conquer. Especially while fighting near Ypres. At the Eastern Front, things are going better for Chief of Staff Ludendorff: he breaks through outstretched Siberian lines. At the same time, Russian soldiers are faced with a new enemy and start the Bergmann Offensive in today’s East-Turkey.

  1. It’s funny how in these early episodes Indy will stand up and step to the big map only to gesture vaguely towards it. Eventually he seems to just give up entirely with interacting with that map.

  2. No, Stalin was warned, but didn’t believe the Germans would invade and spent a week hiding in his dacha allowing millions of Russians to die and whole airfields of planes to be destroyed on the ground before he realized his subordinates were still too scared to kill him and he woke up.

  3. Excellent . But Entente wasn't known as the Aliies , until joined by Italy and the USA joined the Entente later on .

  4. 3:48 Another fun fact about Dixmude: here, a crew of Breton sailors taken from the French navy to hold the line faced off against 50,000 Germans in October and held the line, even when the plain was flooded (they were sailors after all).

  5. This is some great content, i know i am late, but i am glad it got the recognition your work deserves.

  6. I love that we can tell how this was the first recording in a new batch (Przemysl was correctly pronounced now :D) and i'm amazed by how well the music works… maybe a tad loud, but it definitely supports the narration well.

  7. Carl Gustav Mannerheim. Made career at russian army, fought the germans, in finnish civil war in white army, then became a head of independent Finland. Mostly said just about him what he did in second worldwar, but not that much what he did in the first, finnish civil war and after. Others say he is a butcher of Tampere which was decisive victory in the war. Would be interesting to see an episode about him.

  8. This video changes nothing for me, and there are no heroes in war — only criminals that were never indicted. War is insanity and evil, most probably of the banal evil kind, I'm just going to find out exacly how this certain kind of evil emerges.

  9. Many didn't actually charge, they walked with fixed bayonets. Sounds familiar? It is what Napoleon Bonaparte used as a tactic. Massive artillery barrage, slow menacing en masse attack. Doesn't work against well trained troops (the British redcoats in Napoleon Bonaparte time) and machine guns…

  10. Lol I dont understand why not just get a whole bunch of boats and use the sea to outflank the enemy? On the western front

  11. I know it's over a hundred years late, but I have an idea for an ironclad battle tactic – say that you were to stack a large attacking force in one location, saving up shells, beginning an artillery bombardment… then NOT attacking, and simply moving the attacking force to another location. Such feints would occur with no big advances several times in a row, to the point where the enemy intelligence would stop paying so much attention to the details of troop movements. Once this sense of security was entered, the same units would do an artillery bombardment of the same size, only to finally attack in full, concentrated force.

  12. The electoral college needs to be eliminated. The government is in a period where deep long lasting reforms are necessary. Year after year of shutdowns, furloughs, projects started, then halted, then started again.

  13. Senseless war is such a human travesty. When will we ever learn ? So much has been lost forever….so much history, information, inventions, and creativity gone. Terrible evil.
