The New DS923+ is NOT going to have 2.5 GbE. I think it SHOULD

The DS923+ (and the rest of the 23+ units) will not have 2.5GbE built in, but instead have access to the new synology E10G22-T1-Mini. Which allows 10GbE, 5GbE, and 2.5GbE.

Was this the right path? That much is up to you.

  1. Isn't it possible to connect a NAS, e.g. the DS923+, with the USB-3.x Port and a 2.5 GBit-LAN-Adaptor to the local network? That would be an easy and cheap solution? Or does this only work for direct access between PC and NAS? Even then, would it be possible to connect the NAS via USB-RJ45-Adaptor with the PC and use the normal RJ45 port (1 GBit) for the rest of the nework?

  2. Do you know how to turn off the surveillance camˋs when I m coming home? I know home mode, but I donˋt want to login evertime. Do you know another solution? does DS cam work properly?

  3. Enlightening; it seems the DS923+ ($600) & a 10G card ($150) is more expensive than the DS1522+ ($700).
    ?Maybe spoon-feeding us improvements?

  4. Dude, just tell me which NAS to get to make my own drop box. Nothing power user. Just simple drag and drop. Affilink preferred so I can help the channel.

  5. One thing I am curious to see is what kind of performance would be seen over a 2.5gb connection utilizing block storage with the 923+ compared to others.

  6. This is a great channel. I checked your videos on Synology NAS security as well, they are super great, very insightful. You just earned a new sub. Thanks a lot for shearing.

  7. 購買NAS最需要的是軟體與穩定,結果DS923+採用了AMD架構。

    我才不想要把我珍貴的資料數據放到這台該死的機器上

    這簡直就是巨大風險的賭博,對我來說根本沒有好處可言。

  8. lol build your own NAS these things are overpriced and mostly just nerfed with low cost hardware but of course overprice its worth for profit.

  9. As a household that uses Plex, backups, etc. on the nas. I want 10gb to support everyone’s concurrent needs. 1gb is a waste of space.

  10. Great video Will! So you're back, noticed the ring on the finger….lol. Hope you two had a great time.
Yeah totally agree that most people are happy with 1GB NIC. I'm still using the DS 718+ and use a USB 2.5GB adapter with the Github RTL8152/RTL8153 driver into a 2.5GB NIC on the PC so I can copy stuff I've downloaded over to the NAS at around 245mb/s straight from the PC. I also run a 1GB NIC on the PC into a 1GB switch going to the NAS's stock 1GB NIC for everything else, not too bothered for high speed read and write on the rest of the network as 1GB is more than enough for Plex and backups which I use it for plus just using HDD's instead of SSD's I won't get any real benefit with a 10GB connection, as you say, it's more for the enterprise user and not so much the casual home user. Keep up these great videos Will, as always they are a pleasure to watch🙂

  11. .."most users would/will still use 1Gbit connection anyway".. This statement is only true if they buy Synology product -because they only get 1Gbit.
Reality is, almost every motherboard that came to market this year, has 2.5Gbit built-in (and I'm pretty sure no owner will reduce it's speed to 1Gbit). And those who have older motherboard, can buy 2.5Gbit card for $25 and are ready to go. Some still say, that 2.5Gbit is only a temporary solution, not a standard, "real thing" is 10Gbit, etc. But the thing is, in consumer segment (that's "most users"), 2.5Gbit has already become de-facto standard! "Most users" don't need 10Gbit (for 160$).. they're just fine with "only" 2.5-times speed increase.
I think Synology lost the grip and is just milking old tech. Anyway, my next NAS won't be Synology anymore.

  12. Yes, the Ryzen specs come with dual 10GbE baked in. Syno's chosen to nerf things artificially, which disgusts me for these non-enterprise offerings. And another thing: the R1600 also provides four USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports; however, Synology uses its guillotine to chop things down to 5-gig USB ports.

  13. 2.5Gb should be standard, most motherboards come with it now by default.
Still keep the option to go 10Gb with the expansion card
    Both can co-exist

  14. Agreed. 923+ with 2.5Gb and if you want 10Gb go the next one up makes a lot of sense. You can add on 2.5Gb USB to the 4-bays. Someone has forked a driver. It works and it's what I do on my 918+

  15. Agreed, I’m looking at buying the ds923+ and really wish it had 2.5gbe built in. $140 or whatever it is for the 10gbe upgrade is too much for me to justify for my home use. It’s probably not enough to deter me from buying it anyway, but it does make me look a little closer at the competition.

  16. Most people who buy the DS923+ are home users and upgrading to 2.5GbE is simply adding a budget 2.5GbE switch, or some routers already come with 2.5Gb ports. Since most recent motherboards have 2.5GbE on-board as well, surely Synology knows that!

  17. Do you think Synology will come up with a E10G23-F1-Mini that's basically the same form factor proprietary card, but with an SFP+ port instead of a 1/2.5/5/10 Gbps RJ45 port?

  18. As for me … I’m OK with the smaller add on card, though I think they should price point equivalent to the PCIe card. That said, I‘m kind of for the best of all worlds. Since the DS1522+ and DS923+ come with a slot and no card, giving you 2.5GbE ports would better future proof it along with the added advantage of giving you the option to purchase the 10GbE card later on. With that and the best in class OS, they would lead the pack for both prosumers and small businesses. Frankly, if you’re investing in a new NAS and a bunch of multi TB drives, a the added cost for 2.5GbE or 10GbE could be well worth it. JMHO 😉

  19. Another dimension of this that you didn't mention: number of ports. I would easily pay for more speed than more ports. It's odd that they offer 2 ports on the DS923+ and 4 on the DS1522+ at such slow speeds. You're right that most people will end up using only 1GbE, but most people are going to leave most of those ports unused too. So it's odd that they seem to think more ports is better than more speed. If they were going to allow add-on cards, they should use that to support more ports instead as I think that'd be a more "optional" feature.

  20. My internet connexion is 2Gbps ( download so now my entire network is 2.5Gbe. I use my ds920+ as an openVPN server so my nas is now the bottleneck of my network. I wish the ds923+ was 2.5gbe, I m not ready to upgrade to a 10gbe network. I ll change my mind the day my internet connexion will be 8gbe…
Ps : I m using an usb adapter to put 2.5gbe on my ds920+ but it is not reliable

    Thanks for you video.

  21. 95+% of users wont need over gbe. So saving a few bucks and having a 10G option is nice for the power users. Those power users usually don't bother with 2.5, and just jump to 10gbe
    Also an IT person.

  22. Given we aren't getting 2.5GbE anytime soon, how about going over the SMB multi channel option I've heard about. My new DS1821 has 4 1GbE ports, so I assume I can combine them to provide equivalent 2.5G throughput.

  23. I just bought today a qnap nas because of the network connectivity. I really wanted to get a synology for the software and I also like the design but I can’t get past the 1g ethernet ports. I got cat6a cable in my home 9 years ago. How can I buy 1g in 2022?

  24. The ds923+ is now live on the synology site and Amazon and is due for general availability today

  25. Which Synology models support SFP+ for small office/home use?
    Great video as usual 👍
Synology just recently start selling that 10Gb card/port there is zero chance they would go for 2.5 / 10Gb ports. Maybe on the upper-level models.
    Thank you

  26. IMO today 2.5Gbps is a no brainer and I'm still mad at Synology for not including it., I bought the 10 Gbps add-on card and I have a 10 Gbps switch but I also have stuff running 2.5 Gbps too that could have benefited if they had that as an option.

  27. Let’s just cut it down the middle and put mGIG. You get your 2.5g, I get 10g, everyone is happy. It’s 2022 we don’t have to be limited to one choice.

  28. You recommend the iron wolf hard drive on your YouTube videos but when I got some and tried installing them on to my Synology 5-bay DiskStation DS1522+ it gave me a warning ⚠️ message what hard drives do you recommend instead? I’m wanting to put at least 15TB hard drives or bigger in.
