I live near joshimath this is because as you know that Uttrakhand is known for god so, as the people lived their they are shifting towards the city side they decided to take the ling [ which is like shivling like stone of their village (bhagwan ka vas hota hai us mai)] { jaha bhagwan bss jate hai to vaha se unahe koi nahi le ja sakta } due to the shifting of that ling this happen
