  1. With the exception of Gorf, I can remember playing all of these classic games in the arcade. From the looks of Gorf, I missed out on a good arcade game. Great picks! I totally agree.

  2. With Frogger coming in at number 10 and Galaga number 3, I’d say 1981 was the best year in history for gaming. Great list! I’d probably put Galaga as my number one but that’s just down to personal choice – any of DK, Tempest or Galaga are worthy of the number one spot IMO.

  3. My Dad had Cosmic Avenger arcade at his shop from the mid 80's till a few years ago. It is a pretty cool shooter arcade. Unfortunately he sold it…I wanted to keep it but I only have room for 1 arcade unit…which is the Robocop arcade. Maybe someday I can find another Cosmic Avenger arcade…even though it is pretty rare

  4. My pick for top arcade game of 1981 is Sega's Turbo, one of the earliest racing games with scaling graphics for the roadside scenery and the game I consider to be the first major game in Sega's racing game lineage that would eventually lead to Hang On, OutRun, Enduro Racer, Power Drift, Super Monaco GP, RadMobile, Virtua Racing, Daytona USA, Sega Rally, SCUD Race, F355 Challenge, OutRun 2, and beyond.

  5. Brilliant, I remember playing qix in our local youth club, we all used to wait patiently for a turn

  6. a couple of these I never got to see in arcades but definitely have thoughts on the others:

frogger – was a huge fan of the 2600 version, but definitely played many of the various ports to consoles like the GBA arcade collection, a fun time!
Scramble/Super Cobra another one I played a few ports of, I think my first videogame ever was the LCD handheld version by Entex! had so much fun flying through levels shooting enemies, dodging obstacles and trying for the high score!
QIX – the original I'm not super familiar with but some of the later (unofficial) spinoffs, if ya know what I mean. 😛
Ms. Pac-Man probably my all time favorite of the Pac series, I definitely sank many thousand quarters into this one! (a few years ago thanks to the stimulus check I was able to pick up the Arcade 1up version of Ms. Pac-Man! so now I can just fire it up whenever I want!)
centipede: another one I've definitely spent a lot of time with in arcades (and more recently on some of the atari classic compilations that have come out for modern systems like Switch) not super great at it but still a fun time.
galaga: another one that would easily make my early 80s arcade top 5! between the arcade version and the various home console namco museum ports another one I really enjoyed!
tempest: another one I didn't see in arcades but played many hours of in the retro collection re-releases on various systems. a fun one! did play a couple rounds of the Jaguar sequel on the atari 50 collection, a definite must-have if you love the old atari stuff.
donkey kong: another easy pick for my top 5, played a good amount of it between the arcade and NES versions, as well as the switch-exclusive arcade archives version of it!

  7. Which is the better example of 1981 Konami logic: Frog dies in water, or blowing up fuel tank on ground refuels your ship?

  8. Number 7 reminds me of game series that's made my heart pounding playing it when I'm teenage, Gal's Panic 😍

  9. Good year, my favourite out of these is Scramble! Still, I haven´t played Vanguard or Gorf. Donkey Kong and Galaga are both fun as well.

  10. Scramble is an awesome game, since it seems to be the origin of Gradius, my favorite shmup. DK is also an all time classic.

  11. These arcade games really take me back when I was young & I was born in 1981! Ms. Pacman was such a fan game to play in the arcades when they where very much alive in the U.S when I was living there at the time!
