  1. The fact that Bujold's Vorkosigan saga is not at all known to our Goblin here makes me kind of sad. Such a great series. But glad it's on the list.

  2. I kinda wish I got to see the "playing it cool" reaction with Lawful Times got 0 votes, but also, very wholesome reaction to the 1 vote 😊

  3. How did Ascendance of a Bookworm make it above AoT and HxH???
I feel like it has to be biased, maybe more people wish they could be the mc in Bookworm, but I think that is silly that two of the most popular and mainstream manga series ever got beat out by a fairly niche and way worse, imo, series. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy Bookworm, but it probably doesn't belong on this list.

  4. While I will admit, being forced to read it may play a part of me not liking Fahrenheit 451, it is mainly because I didn't like the ending. That is more a matter of genre than writing. Older dystopia novels always have depressing endings, which I just don't enjoy. More recent dystopia fiction tends to be more hopeful, such as ready player one or hunger games, but they lean a bit more I to the action than metaphor and analogy. The one dystopia fiction with possibly depressing ending that I've actually enjoyed so far was The Giver.

  5. Naomi Novik got a few mentions in that list. And I would highly recommend her writing. There's something fresh and introspective and her worlds are very very well constructed. Uprooted is really really good.

    >.> Redwall still being remembered is special. I really should make a point to go buy the series and re-read them. . .they are worth being on my shelf.

  6. Great to see the black company on the list.

And also. Can anyone tell me why the first law is so hyped? It was a slog to get through and the story never really went anywhere. That bayaz guy was obvious bad guy since his first appearance. I had to look up his name, because i don't remember a single character name, the only thing i do remember is that guy that kept saying "say one thing about this, it's that"..

I don't know. I found nothing really likeable about the trilogy, storywise i have read hundreds better. Characterwise the same.

So.. Do you like the first law thing? Feel free to share your reasons and feelings!

  7. Zones of thought is Science fiction. So is Ready player 1. Why is Science fiction in a top 100 fantasy list. Surely there is enough good fantasy (and Science fiction) to do pure top 100 lists. It's insulting. You don't see top 100 lists of Mystery combined with Romance.

  8. It makes me so sad that the Acts of Caine is so low because it is so freaking good. Some of the greatest character work I've seen, which the guys from Inking Out Loud will corroborate. And with Matthew Stover working on more books in the world I hope it gets more love

  9. Given the way other authors works were combined, all of Sanderson's Cosmere books maybe should have been grouped together. If that had been done he'd still have scored two spots on the list since Skyward is not Cosmere and Cosmere would have come in #1 by the kind of margin you expected for Stormlight alone.

  10. Daniel,

I don't remember you reading Vlad Taltos by Stephen Brust from the list. If you haven't read it yet, I would definitely recommend it. I think you might find it a very fun series.

  11. I love manga, but it bothers me that it's included when they titled the poll: Fantasy Top Novels 2023. Manga are NOT novels. They should just title like you did: Top Fantasy Series 2023.

  12. Very excited to hear Daniel's finally getting around to Black Company in the near future. Also gotta give a shout-out to The Acts of Caine, since I know Heroes Die is sitting there, staring at him…

  13. someone needs to convince me to continue with the dragon republic because I’m a soft boi and i don’t think i want the same constant darkness as in the poppy war… but the story itself is very interesting and I do care about what’s going to happen to the characters

  14. I don’t think there is recency bias. I think some older books are just boring. Modern authors do a better job captivating the attention of modern readers.

  15. Did Darker Shade of Magic get snubbed haha?
It shouldn’t be super high but it should be for sure comparable (maybe better than) Grishaverse. Or maybe it’s on there and I just missed it

  16. Oh I’m so glad to see Inda on there!!! No one ever talks about it. And nettle and bone is unrelated to shadow and bone. I really enjoyed it!

Oh wow and the Tortall Universe!! Easily one of my all time favs

  17. Greenbone saga kinda surprises me. I am halfway through the second book, and I don’t quite get the hype. It really fails to capture my attention. Biggest reason is it feels like such big jumps between chapters and doesn’t have an amazing flow to it. I haven’t watched or read any reviews so maybe I’m missing something, and not seeing what people appreciate about it.

  18. to be fair to the princess bride, the movie is far better, especially with buttercup as a character

  19. That is not how ties work.
The top 100 Fantasy Series should be a collection of 100 fantasy series.
Not the top 100 spots in ranking the top fantasy series.

  20. the x is a cross standing for a space, not a letter. you don't pronounce it. it's just "Hunter Hunter"

  21. I read Fahrenheit 451 last week. It was alright. I really liked the writing, had good concepts, but the ending and the world building was so lacking and unsatisfactory. Also I would say it is dystopia and not fantasy. Same with 1984 and Hunger Games; they're dystopia, not fantasy – two different genres in my opinion.
