Truly EPIC Retro Game Hunt in Tokyo

I went out to west Tokyo to do some game hunting at a Hard Off in Tachikawa, but what I didn’t expect was that the Book Off in town had even more games, including rare and expensive games that I almost never see in the wild. It was indeed EPIC!

  1. That is a very cool store. You should have extended the video by 30 min, Jim! 🙂 I am also looking at the "overpriced" prices in Japan and thinking that people would cry with tears of joy to see those kind of deals in North America, lol.

  2. It's so cool how the Japanese culture really Embraces their own products like video games and seeks to preserve them much better than they do here in America because these old titles are just simply tossed aside, sold or thrown in the trash which boggles my mind as a collector but that's just how it is here in the states

  3. What browser me away is hiw these stores are everywhere in Japan, and at a book off, you'll find immaculately preserved boxed games, and just the lore of it all, how tidy it all looks– it's even more exciting than when it was new. Love it.

  4. You should've dug through all these games for 1,5 hours and record it 😉 P.s.: A review of Crows would be nice one day

  5. As someone that buys imports watching these makes me sad. Melty Blood: Actress Again sells for over $30 on ebay!! So curious, what is the going price for the PC Engine and Sega Saturn over there? 2 systems I am looking to import.

  6. My very first console I've ever owned was the SEGA master system my father bought for me back in 1986 when I was 8 years old. Gaming consoles I've personally owned throughout my life since then, have been the NES (purchased by my mom), Gameboy (purchased by my late paternal Grandmother. I love and miss her dearly), SEGA Genesis (again, my mom), PlayStation One, PS2, NINTENDO DS Lite, XBOX 360, PS3 Slim, PS VITA, PS4 (original, slim and PRO), New NINTENDO 3DS XL, XBOX ONE X, Nintendo Switch (original and OLED), XBOX SERIES S. My little sister owned a Super Nintendo, so I played those games through her. Though I didn't own them, I had the SEGA SATURN and Dreamcast in my possession thru friends, and owned a TON of fighting games on those two systems. I have a ton of interesting stories on each console I've ever owned, or had in my possession.

  7. "I didn't think it would look great on camera if I just dug through these games for like, an hour."

    That's where you're wrong, kiddo.

  8. I know everyone dogs on the latest Contra entry, but I enjoyed it! I love how over the top everything is (one of the super bombs your guy gets on the missile and just rides it into the ground killing several enemies at once!) it's more top-down than side-scroller (and also introduces an overheating mechanic I guess to add a bit of suspense while you're waiting to go on the offense again) I think my main complaint is lack of a proper co-op mode, and maybe if they went in a little more on the retro remixes of the music it would have been a hell of a lot better! also yeah wow crazy amount of great retro stuff there! almost wish we HAD gotten a full two hours of digging, haha. 😛

  9. That WWF Wrestlemania game was one of the first games we got for our SNES. Pretty cool to see the Super Famicom version. The nostalgia is real.

  10. Lots of good stuff for retro systems must have been nice to go through that?.i would have been there for hrs as well!.enjoyed another great video.steam gear mash on the saturn is a true hidden gem great, great game

  11. This Epic Retro game hunt looked very expensive I must say with the amount of old retro games that came out for the Famicom, SFC, Saturn, & others were just so ridiculously so expensive there! By the way please don't waste your money on that Contra Rogue Corps it's a terrible game for the switch & it doesn't play like the past Contra games that we all know & enjoy here mate!

  12. That was a serious wall of 3 generations of retro games. Since this was a Book Off Super Bazaar, I was not surprised for them to have more than the regular Book Off. At least in what I have seen in other video's from several creators. Nonetheless, nice find there Jim. Like Eric Ng mentioned, there is a Suruga-ya around the corner as well. Spotted it on the map.

  13. My parents bought me SNES with Super Wrestlemania after I had eye surgery as a kid. I'll never forget playing that with one eye all hopped up on hospital drugs. Good…times.

  14. Oh, interesting! I found the best deals for retro games at BOOK OFF 2 years ago compared to all the other stores.
But that was in Nagoya of course. Maybe it's different compared to Tokyo. I know that there are many more BOOK OFFs in Nagoya for example.

  15. To be fair, a lot of the games also had that yellow label that explains what's wrong with it (box damage, missing manual, etc.). Maybe the Surugaya around the corner either refused to buy them or offered a low price for these non-mint games, so people sold them at this Bookoff instead.

  16. I actually found a full boxed copy of Battle Mobile for the Super Famicom a while ago for a decent price. Really fun game 😊😊😊
