What Got Me Into Retro Game Collecting?

I received a question recently here on YouTube asking about my history as a retro gamer and retro game collector, and if I became interested in retro gaming after moving to Japan. So, I sat down with a cold beer and recounted my retro gaming journey.

  1. I should make a video of my own about this someday, but I started collecting retro games in my late teenage years, as I was finishing high school in the late 2000's. I was playing games my whole life and even as the years went by before I started collecting I'd pull out my older game consoles once or twice a year when I felt like revisiting older classics, plus I liked seeing the occasional compilation of retro games like the Mega Man, Street Fighter, and Sonic collections of the day. What really got me more interested in checking out more older games was The Angry Video Game Nerd and the Wii Virtual Console. Those two things introduced me to games I'd never heard of or didn't know much about. While I liked buying Virtual Console games, especially anything there that was already crazy expensive or was Japan exclusive, it made me feel like looking for old cartridges and discs online, and since I had recently gotten my first job back then and was still living with my parents for a while, I decided to look online for a bunch of games. I focused mainly on Sega stuff because, besides Game Gear and Nomad, I only had Nintendo and PlayStation systems growing up, and I had very few Sega games, so I wanted to check out all the Sega stuff I'd missed out on. I got a Genesis CDX and a Dreamcast shortly thereafter and sought out a lot of games for both with the help of various youtuber recommendations and Sega-16.com. I hadn't really stopped collecting yet, but I amassed a lot of Sega games since then and got a Saturn and an Xbox a few years ago. I still enjoy collecting games for just about every system I own, new and old.

  2. I grew up with the Atari, having seen it first on display at Sears while in a stroller in the late '70s. In the mid-'90s I resented the 3DO and all the push for FMV and 3D gaming. I preferred pixel-based 2D gaming then and still do today. Not that I refuse to play 3D games, and some like the Wipeout and Dead or Alive series are my favorites. But I'll always be a 2D gamer at heart. The last console I bought was a PS2. Later I was given a hand-me-down 360 for free, for which I've mostly purchased 2D shmups for. And on Steam, it's mostly 2D games like shmups and Metoridvania-type games. So it's not so much of me being a retro gamer, but basically I just never stopped being myself and continued to cling to the stuff I like best.

  3. Nice vid, keep up the good content. Could make a vid of the best places where to shop in Tokyo for retro games? I'm particularly interested in ps2 games. Cheers m8

  4. I didn’t realize it at the time but apparently I’ve been collecting retro games since buying my first console in 1989 the Sega Genesis. I’ve been buying and playing video games since then and I have most of what I’ve purchased, it’s definitely a retro collection and I love them more than my current generation consoles and games

  5. So good chat. I started with a SNES, then switched to Megadrive. I felt in love with the SegaCD design and the Saturn, but never had those. I discover retrogaming with JapanJemu channel, then bought those old ladies. I really like those old games, and good stories like yours.

  6. Nice to hear your story bro. We were so poor we couldn't afford any kind of computer or console. The first memory I have of playing video games was when I was 5 we went on this incredibly boring holiday to a holiday camp, the only good thing they had was a tiny arcade with only Space Invaders and the sit down Star wars cab which was pretty new at the time. I was obsessed with the Star Wars game and by the time we left I could stick ten pence in that thing and play through loop after loop. It was amazing, I thought I was Luke Skywalker.

  7. Love the show i just can’t have a flashing screen in the background 😢 no worries I’ll put in some airpods and listen tonight. Looking forward to it!

  8. Love listening to stories from Jim. So fantastic to listen in on what he has to say. One of these days we need to see you with retro photos of you growing up playing video games bro. 8^)

    Anthony..

  9. Thank you for your service. What an incredible and inspiring story. Luke is such a great guy. He got me into import gaming in general. The Hard Off videos especially. I’ve actually been a retro gamer since I was young because my brother gave me his Magnavox Odyssey and Atari 2600 when Nintendo and Game Boy were the popular thing somewhere around halfway through their lifecycle. He just passed May 27th at age 55 unfortunately. I just lost my father at age 84 only six days ago. My father was stationed in Germany during peacetime in the early 1960s in the Army. This video brought back some other great memories I had of my brother and father and I gaming together over the years.

  10. man I bet prices were good for retro games back then. also, it’s funny that you mention the hate-bit podcast. that’s exactly how I found out about you. I’m glad you’re still going strong and making videos after all this time

  11. Lukemorse, man that's old school. Personally the show that got me collecting older stuff is Retro Core.
PS: what happened to the night scape background with the SoR tune?

  12. I started getting into retro game collecting pretty recently, I’m only 26 so my first console was the gameboy color and I had Pokémon red and blue and eventually yellow, what actually started it recently though vs nostalgia was I got into Tetris on my switch the Tetris 99 game and was having fun with it and was wondering if there was competitive Tetris and I guess the big scene for that turned out to be Tetris for the NES, so I picked up an NES and a copy of Tetris, and then I got a custom gameboy advance (new shell plus a few modifications like backlight and stuff) so I could play some of the games I had as a kid and some of the ones I missed out on especially from the original gameboy era and also so I could get a gameboy camera to make art with as I’m an artist of all sorts, and then I found out about dragon quest from a Twitter mutual who’s Japanese so I got dragon warrior for my nes and fell in love with it, then got bummed out realizing the rest of the games were super expensive for the English versions, and then I found out Japanese games were way cheaper and a bunch of dragon quest titles were only ever released in Japan and so I picked up a super famicom and started learning Japanese and now my retro game collection is pretty sizable cus everything is so cheap in Japan and it’s not too bad to import stuff if you order a bunch of stuff on like sendico and ship it all together, so yeah mostly been collecting games I never got to play or sort of games that existed before I was even born and it’s been awesome experiencing all this stuff especially dragon quest, also I’m glad I found your channel I’ve really fallen in love with shoot ‘em ups now based on your recommendations been having a good time with the Parodius series and gradius

  13. By first visiting a Game X Change in the late 90s, I was blown away that all the games I grew up with were dirt cheap. NES games were priced at $4. SNES and Genesis games were $8. That's when buying big collections felt so easy to get.

  14. The year was 2005…Ii didnt realize i was a vg collector. I was laying on my couch and watching Youtube videos and noticed, hey i do that and have a pile of games. Before that i had only thought…i just play video games,I then started to hit resale shops and pawn shops and my gsme collection exploded.

  15. Always great to hear stories like this! Good one, Jim!
Ever since I sold my SNES to get PS1, I kept playing it through emulation.
SNES is the one console I always came back to no matter how cool all the newer games were.

  16. Is there any way to get the brewed in Japan Asahi Super Dry here in the United States? None is sold in my area, and I've heard most of it that is shipped to the states isn't brewed in Japan. I'd just like to try some.

  17. Great to hear how it all started! I think grew up with games and still continue to play games. I think it all kind of started as Arcade Game cabinets and flippers era.

  18. I started collecting with the super Nintendo cuz after you play a game you get rid of it and you're like you know I really want to play that game again but you didn't have it so I started collecting games after that

  19. Discovered your channel recently and have been really enjoying the content, considering signing up for your monthly game box too.

  20. Hello Jim I love watching your content & I'm not the biggest video game collector here but I'm still love video games even Japanese video games that are from companies like Capcom, Tecmo, SNK, Sony, & others too! Thanks for sharing & hope you enjoy your weekend! 👍😎🎮🇬🇧

  21. Great and often overlooked topic of a video! For someone who grew up with the 8bit era and never stepped away from gaming – apart from a period during uni when girls and parties were a tad more fun -it’s about capturing memories to a large extent. Fun and nostalgia. Add to that, amazing fun gameplay and artwork and music that I never get tired of.
