WHAT TO EAT IN A TRAIL MARATHON OR 50K RACE : Trail Marathon & 50k Training & Racing Guide EP 04/09








When training for a 50k ultra marathon or trail marathon distance It’s important to practice eating during long training runs because on race-day you’ll be out running longer than you would be for say a road marathon because of the extra challenges that trail running throws at you and the longer period of time you will be running for during your trail marathon or 50k race.

Nutrition can be a very difficult thing to get right, especially for ultrarunners who run for hours (sometimes days) at a time, where nausea, gut bombs, and code browns can manifest at any moment (yes those are all real words, haha).

If you’re having trouble finding a solution that works for you as part of your trail marathon and 50k training plan then I feel your pain. I have made my way through so many different running nutrition products because most just didn’t work for me, or were too sweet and tasted artificial, even though they seemingly work for others. I’m not a fan of nutrition that’s too sugary as those drinks will cause energy spikes, which is not good for endurance running, especially when you’re targeting marathon or ultra marathon distances. These are the tips everyone needs to know when training and racing a trail marathon or 50k but are rarely shared. As a long-time trail and ultra runner I hope you’ll find my personal tried-and-tested tips helpful for your trail marathon training, and race day.

Although in this video I refer to running a trail marathon race distance, this trail marathon training plan and race guide also applies to training for a 50k ultra race. I train and plan for both races exactly the same way, because in reality there is only 8km / 5 miles difference between the two races, which in the context of a trail race this long doesn’t make any difference to the focus and effort I put into training, nutrition, recovery and race tactics.
