Take your game to the next level:

There is some strategy to running it once vs running it twice, but it doesn’t have to do with altering your equity with your poker hand.

Like Phil Galfond mentions in the end of this poker strategy clip, Phil Ivey only runs it once as he believes it makes him more intimidating to play large pots against.

However, at the end of the day your equity doesn’t change in any pot by choosing to run it once or run it twice.

By choosing to run it once or run it twice you’ve only affected your variance in that poker hand, which should not be ignored!

Lowered variance in huge poker pots can lead to more consistent results and less frequent huge bankroll swings, a definite positive to consider.

  1. Fake News, not true, equity isn’t always the same !
For example, let’s say flop is 667 and you are heads up all in with pocket 66, opponent has 77, you should always run it more than once in this spot because you cannot lose. The opponent only has one out and can only hit it once so you are essentially freerolling by running it twice or guaranteeing yourself a win if 3+ whereas you can lose if u run it once. This actually happened at my table a couple a sessions ago, the quad 6 only wanted to run it once and the 3 sevens hit the last 7 on river. Sickest bad beat I’ve ever seen.

  2. In your local cash game with regulars you should just stick to the same thing every time… huge dick move imo to want to run it twice sometimes and only once others.

I prefer one time but I always leave it up to the other player. But I do think theoretically it makes more sense to run it once when you are behind and multiple times when ahead. The thought being that when you are ahead you reduce the chances of getting sucked out on and losing completely to almost zero but when you are behind you are very unlikely to win both run outs so it makes sense to just go for the one suck out.

  3. Do you have any problem with people using the cashout option online? Everyone says it's stupid but nobody can tell me why

  4. If you run several times, each result is not indépendant.
Suppose you have nut flush draw on thé flop given a spade, and you want to run it 4 Times.
First board gives 2 spades and win but It also décreases your chances to make a flush in the future draws.
If you run it one Time, the result is not changed wether 1 or 2 spades come out.

  5. I sit down in home games and immediately announce, I only run once. I don’t want people calling hoping to win half. Nope. Out for blood 🩸. However, that does allow me to say, ok. I’ll run in twice in monster pots 😂😂

  6. Hi Phil! I think there is one factor that you did not note in the video. For a cash game, if you run it twice, the probability of split pot is higher. But you still pay the rake. So from the rake point of view it is more beneficial to run it once as you either win or lose, but in run it twice scenerio you have a high chance of getting your money back and just losing rake. What do you think about it?

  7. it shouldn't be allowed in serious tournaments. literally the essence of poker is like russian roulette, you're ultimately taking your chances and this variance bullshit takes the high drama risk out of the game. you should win or lose it all on go round, not 3. old school poker players acknowledged this, it's modern autistic nerds who treat poker like a maths equation and don't understand its soul.

  8. You have a huge edge if you have the bankroll to handle variance vs people who dont. Running once induces way more tilt for people who cant handle it

  9. I always give the guy with a smaller stack the option. I think it's a nice courtesy and most of the time I'll have the bigger stack and the best hand when the money goes in.

  10. I run it once against a good player because I'm hoping he'll leave if I stack him.
Against a bad player, I leave it up to him because I want bad players to stay happy and feel welcome.

  11. yea nah, im not doing twice ever. its either thrice or once…there has to be a winner…im playing to win, not to chop. thrice guarantees at least one wins

  12. in the vacuum of a single hand, it doesn’t matter because your equity is the same no matter how many times you run it. however if you consider the future, running it once makes it more likely for someone to get stacked, which puts more money on the table if people rebuy, which makes it +EV to run it once when playing with whales. on the other hand, if a fish will leave the table once they get stacked, then running it as many times as possible will be +EV so they don’t leave and you have more chances to win off them

  13. If u have a flush draw, 33 percent to win, if u run it twice and win once. Ur taking 50 percent of the pot. its still a positive ev to take half the pot, cuz u really should only take 33 percent of the pot in the long run. And if u brick 1st board. More likely to hit ur cards in the second. Idk if this means anything. I always thought it was interesting thought
