Wood Burning – CHRISTMAS RACE – pyrography tutorial (Davy JY art drawing)

In this pyrography wood burning tutorial episode, I will explain how to the Christmas Race artwork. The tutorial is a bit long because there are a number of different objects in the artwork that I had to explain. To make things easy, I’ve broken the video down into chapters that cover the individual items. I will mention that for those who love to add color to their work, this would be a fun piece to do that with.

There are several times where I’m using white charcoal to mark the location of highlights. Once the charcoal isn’t needed erase it.
Do not use a colored pencil in place of charcoal. Colored pencils contain wax that will melt and char under the heat of the pen tip.

The artwork is based on a drawing by David Young. David has a youtube channel, and I highly recommend checking it out. @Davy.J.Y

There is a written version of this tutorial available on my website. The written tutorial has the free pattern that you can use. It’s available at:

This tutorial uses terms like circular motion and uniform strokes. If you are unfamiliar with my terminology this video explains and demonstrates the terms:
