HISTORY
Launched: 1957 as a general cargo ship by Jadewerft Gmbh, Wilhelmshaven and owned by Behrmann R. & W., Itzehoe
2003: seized by the US Customs Service for smuggling narcotics
October 28, 2003: In conjunction with the 2003 Dive Equipment and Marketing Association (D.E.M.A.) annual convention that was held in Miami, the G.D.D. Trader was renamed the D.E.M.A. Trader and sunk as an artificial reef off Key Biscayne.

Name History:
Alk (1957)
Martin M. (1990)
Mondia (1993)
GGD Trader (1998)
DEMA Trader (2003)
Divesite:

The wreck of the D.E.M.A. Trader rests upright and intact in approximately 80feet of water just to the north of the tug Rio Miami and to the west of the Sarah Jane artificial reef site. Large openings were cut in the sides of the superstructure to allow safe penetration into the former galley and cabin areas. Tons of concrete culvert pipes and junction boxes were also loaded into the ship’s cargo hold to produce additional complex habitat for marine life.

  1. Great wreck video, Alejandro! I wondered at the start of the video if it would be tied to the actual DEMA show – and yes, it was! Looks like a nice easy penetration too.
