The Reason those tangs on those rod bearings have to be oriented down when installed is because of the rotation of the crankshaft if you oriented the tangs to the top then when you crank that engine you would spin the rod bearings inside the rod thus destroying the whole engine because with that happening it would seize the rod bearings thus bending and breaking the rods and sending the pistons either thru the side of the block or thru the heads either way the engine is destroyed. Im 79 years old and have done mechanics all my life and been to many schools s how I know this and by the ay him handling that crankshaft in the manner he did with hiis bare hands could have caused a corrosive effect on that crankshaft he shouldve had plastic protective gloves on handling that crankshaft

I really want to pull my engine out (97 outback with 247k miles and a lot of problems) to put all new gaskets/seals in it and do some other work but I fear the rocker cover and head bolts will be too tough to take off, or I’ll snap/round a bolt. I don’t have air tools or anything special to work on the engine, I’m going to buy a torque wrench and some penetrating oil and a torch. I’m just praying I don’t need to have the heads machined or that something goes wrong because I need to get it done in a couple days. I might just find another engine and swap it and tinker with my old one, rebuild it and sell it

    I just learned how to check correct ring clearance properly, ring land failure and A/B pistons. After a few more re-watches I might feel comfortable taking on this task. My respect to both the camera man and Mike!

  8. Hi I followed your instructions on the Subaru 2.5L dual-overhead cam STI short block EJ25. I removed the engine had it milled and rebuilt and installed the motor. I keep blowing the rear main seal on the engine.
    This is the second time it has happened. Any suggestions on what might be going on?

  10. Just wondering if you can clarify the rod tang position,,all facing down with the rods in there correct position? Or all facing drivers side when rods upright looking at the crank front to rear?

  13. When I was at uni I would often see (much younger than my older self) people struggling with various concepts. I developed a jam with my lecturer where I would ask what many would call a dumb question that gave him an avenue to explain the question in an equally "dumb", but entirely different way. You could see heads shoot up and nod across the room as people groked on.

    I feel that energy between the cameraman and Mike. Asking the "dumb" questions to make sure there is plenty of space to explain a concept. Especially stuff like "in the world of computers, it makes a difference", because despite knowing my way around an engine bay, my IT monkey brain still chirped up with "Are we talking clean room clean? Finger grease on my precious new DIMMs clean?". I learned stuff I didn't even know I needed to know here.

    Revolutionary and organic approach gents, I love it.

  16. As a pro engine builder and machinist, I came across this vid and had to watch the entire thing. He is very good and dumbs it down for any average Joe to feel completely confident in assembling his Subi engine.
    For all those DISLIKES…apparently they were the ones hatched knowing it all are second to none including GOD. The douchebag crew i guess.

  18. so just to clarify when you hear the click noise out of your torque wrench, that's when you don't want to go any further, right? Okay cool, back to the project that I have no hope of completing successfully without at least a couple years experience working with things like torque wrenches…

  20. From a metallurgical stand point, you wouldn’t want to reuse a connecting rod that overheated like that because it could remove any heat treatment that was done at the factory making the metal more malleable or even make it brittle depending on the scenario.
    Definitely a paper weight at that point,

  22. Question for knowledge.. is 50w the preferred oil to build this motor and why? Can you use assembly line to put on the bearings to seat everything down?

  25. I used to work at a saab dealership and we used to go out of our way to not work on our knees. At end of the day the owner used to mercilessly make fun of the guys with dirty knees. everyone would spend about 3 hours a week mopping the shop floors.
